What are sensory boxes?
To be honest, sensory boxes are great for everyone of any age, whether neurotypical or neurodiverse.
However, they are particularly helpful for children on the autism spectrum.
Inside a sensory box are usually loads of little trinkets and toys that can help children self-regulate their emotions, as well as have fun therapeutic play!
My 12-year-old loves running his fingers in faux fur, rubbing sequined pillows, feeling different textures like feathers and slime. He also responds well to things like fidget spinners and rubber bands, things that click or make a sound.
All in all, sensory boxes help people relax, calm down, and concentrate better.
They’re also great for building fine motor skills as the kids use their fingers to manipulate objects for fun. And they present learning opportunities in the form of vocabulary and new experiences.
